  1. The Government of Japan announces today its decision to award the Fourth Hideyo Noguchi Africa Prize as follows.
    Medical Research category
    Dr. Salim S. Abdool Karim (Republic of South Africa)

    Director, Center for the AIDS Programme of Research in South Africa (CAPRISA). CAPRISA Professor of Global Health at the Mailman School of Public Health, Columbia University, New York. Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research) at the University of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa.

    Dr. Quarraisha Abdool Karim (Republic of South Africa)

    Associate Scientific Director of CAPRISA. Professor of Epidemiology at the Mailman School of Public Health, Columbia University, New York. Pro Vice-Chancellor (African Health), University of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa.

    Guinea Worm Eradication Program

    A global campaign, led by The Carter Center in partnership with stakeholders in Africa, to eradicate the second human disease in history.

    The Hideyo Noguchi Africa Prize (HNAP) Committee (Chairperson, Dr. Kiyoshi Kurokawa, Professor Emeritus of National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies) selected final candidates among individuals or organizations recommended by each sub-committee (medical research category and medical services category), and the Prime Minister made a final decision of the laureates on the basis of the recommendation by the HNAP Committee.   2. The Prize aims to honor individuals or organizations with outstanding achievements in the fields of medical research and medical services to combat infectious and other diseases in Africa, thus contributing to the health and welfare of the African people and of all humankind (Cabinet Decision of July 28, 2006).
  3. The awarding ceremony of the Fourth Hideyo Noguchi Africa Prize hosted by Prime Minister will be organized at the Eighth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD 8) to be held in Africa (Tunisia) on August 27th and 28th, 2022. The Hideyo Noguchi Africa Prize is composed of a citation and a medal for each laureate and an honorarium of 100 million yens (approximately 1 million US dollars (* fluctuations according to the exchange rate)) for each category. The honorarium is disbursed from the Government funds and private funding from national and international donations.
