【Press Release】Issue of Special Postage Stamps of the Second Hideyo Noguchi Africa Prize

  1. Japan Post Co., Ltd. announced it would issue special postage stamps of the Second Hideyo Noguchi Africa Prize. The details of the stamps are as below.
    (1) Name of the stamps – The Second Hideyo Noguchi Africa Prize
    (2) The date of issue – May 31, 2013
  2. Dr. Hideyo Noguchi (1876-1928) was born in Fukushima. Dr. Noguchi is still admired nationwide and particularly in Fukushima. In March 2011, Fukushima was seriously hit by the Great East Japan Earthquake and is on its way to reconstruction. We hope the stamps issued in commemoration of the Second Hideyo Noguchi Africa Prize will encourage the people of Fukushima.

About the special postage stamps of the First Hideyo Noguchi Africa Prize in 2008
The special postage stamps of the First Hideyo Noguchi Africa Prize were issued on May 23, 2008 in commemoration of the First Prize ceremony on May 28, 2008. The year 2008 was 80th anniversary of Dr. Hideyo Noguchi’s death.

About the Hideyo Noguchi Africa Prize
The Government of Japan established the Hideyo Noguchi Africa Prize in July 2006 in memory of Dr. Hideyo Noguchi (1876-1928) whose contribution to medical advancement and self-sacrificing activities in Africa remain a paragon of professionalism. Mindful of the ominous human suffering persisting in Africa, the region facing the most serious health challenge on the globe, the Prize aims to honour individuals or organizations with outstanding achievements in the fields of medical research and medical services to combat infectious and other diseases in Africa, thus contributing to the health and welfare of the African people and of all humankind.
