        2nd May :During his visit to Ghana, Prime Minister Koizumi elaborated on the concept of the Prize in the joint press conference with President John Agyekun Kufuor following their meeting

        25th July :Prime Minister Koizumi officially announced the creation of the Prize on the occasion of the visit to Japan by Professor Alpha Oumar Konare, Chairperson of the Commission of the African Union

        28th July :Japanese Cabinet decision to institute the Prize (PDF)

        6th October :Basic framework was endorsed at the meeting of heads of bureaus in government ministries in charge of the Prize

        21st December :Basic framework approved by the Council of Advisors

        30th January :Adoption of the General Implementing Guidelines (Prime Minister's Decree)

        March :Opening of nominations

        28th June :1st Meeting of the Hideyo Noguchi Africa Prize Committee

        10th July :Closure of nominations

        July - December :Selection process in the Medical Research Subcommittee and the Medical Services Sub-commitee

        29th May :Commemorative Lecture by the Laureates (United Nations University, Tokyo)

        30th May :Commemorative Lecture by the Laureates (University of Aizu, Fukushima)
